First Coin and Coin Condition Question

Post by 52747 »

Hi All

Today I finally found my first coin on the beach. I was so excited, until I rinsed it in the water and saw that it was a 2003 10p. Not only that, but one side was completely worn away. So my questions are this :

1. Are most / all beach coins in very bad condition ?
2. What can I do with it ? It's not old enough to want to keep, and I'm pretty sure no shop would accept it ?!

Drill a hole in it and use it as a washer.

I just give them a bit of a clean then put them in bank bags. When I have a few full bags I take them to the bank. Had a few funny looks but as long as you can see what the coin is they have always taken them.

It's your very first metal detecting coin - why on earth wouldn't you want to keep it and display it with pride? =))

The more modern ones are made of steel nowadays and plated with copper, etc. They get corroded pretty fast on the beaches. Some banks accept them in terrible condition, it's the ones that are almost unrecognisable they wont touch. Worth starting a collection and visiting a local bank at the end of the year or something. you may be surprised by the amount you get back for them.
