I am curious why some of you guys seem to be spending nearly £100 (except Mr BA) on Headphones?
In the past, I have used a Whites Prism 3 and a Minelab Quattro, both without wearing Headphones and with good success.
Surely the lead gets in the way and don't all Metal Detectors have built in Speakers?
Unless you are detecting next to a busy road or have a noisy Wife following you, why can't you simply listen to the Metal Detector beeping? I used to go out alone so wouldn't be disturbing anyone!
Am I missing something here?
Why Headphones?

you are correct. However, some people believe you get better sound quality from headphones which may pick out those little noises that could quite easily be missed by just using the speaker. It also, I believe, uses less battery power than the speaker.
I personally am like yourself, I will only use them if windy, with quite a few other detectorists around (such as a rally), or quite a noisy area.
I suppose in the end it is just down to personal choice.

I think if you wear headphones where your ears are totally covered its going to help listen in to those deep more faint signals B-)
I took a trip to the beach a few days ago and there was a fair wind blowing, was so glad I took the headphones as it would have been very difficult to hear without.
In many situations you do tend to get a fair bit of background noise without using headphones.
Also during the winter months there going to keep your ears warm
Cheers

Ear Phones are a must have on a club dig or a rally as the constant (we hope) binging from an unphoned machine not fair on other detectorists. If you alone or just a few friends then I see no other problem than the possible missed faint signal or the interfearing of other background noise.
