My First Session with the Deus on Bognor Beach

Post by Cooper natural »

Hi guys,

I got out to use my Deus for the first time yesterday, I was excited as i knew we had a good spring tide, and the rain held off but the wind gave me a lovely tan :D . Got there as the tide was just lashing the smaller stones and on its way out so started off detecting the stones. Wasnt 100% sure what mode to do this on but to start with i had a go on the dry pebbles on basic 1, it was working fine, found a few ring pulls and Johnny packets etc, as the tide was retreating i was working my way down the beach into the wet stones and sand, I but the machine into wet beach mode and it was doing a fine job.

I found some modern coins 50p,10p,5p,2p,1p and a Canadian 10cent which i convicned my self was silver but its aparently copper nickel. I also found a couple of interesting things, one was a ladys watch face, on first impressions it looked valuable but im not 100%, i also found a lump of metal which i think could be pewter it could be a top rim of a tankard, it has two markings on it (13) and a Hexagon with what looks like an Anchor inside.
I found one large fishing Lead and i got some readings from so rather large clumps of metal slag type stuff, not sure if this was coke or not maybe jst a large clump of iron? there were a few of theses. I knew when i was digging a coin up from the reading, but i have got a massive learnign curve before i know even the slightest about this machine.

one question you guys maybe able to answer is regarding the Ground balance when its on wet beach mode I assume the GB is automatic as i noticed it varying alot the two smaller readings ont he remote were mostly say 23 & 27.

I will try and upload a picture later when i get home.
Thanks

Tides are a bit better than they have been at the moment.Did You go the Butlins side or other side of the pier Lee? If the Canadian cent is wartime dated its no surprise. They were all camped in and around Bognor during the war.

I was down the complete opposite end to Butlins, down by the beach huts.
The 10 cent was a 1983 so not even Old LOL.

Bold Digger, thank you for the offer not sure I will be able to get down there this weekend, I did see one other down there but we didn't chat, he seemed to be getting a few readings also.

Thanks

Hello Lee, Once in Program 7 Wet beach Mode, in ground balance set it to beach ::g
I am surprised you were not getting any mineralisation problems at all :-O
Lucky you! ::g

By mineralisation do you mean chatter/interference? there were a few times it started to chatter but it appeared to be if I went from wet sand onto the wet-dry stones, then it started to chatter a bit so then I would turn the machine off place the coil on the ground and turn it back on again, it seemed to be ok again after that, might be worth noting it was a very windy day, and I was not using headphones as the missus was with me and wanted to here the tones, maybe the chatter was there but it was quiet and I wasn't hearing the chatter?
Think I will do a bit more playing today with the control box.

Thanks guys

Yes the machine giving false signal due to the mineralisation of the salt water.
It can get a little much at times but setting the ground balance to beach and maybe increasing the manual balance will sort that out ::g
I have recently been to the beach experimenting with the Deus to see how it can cope in wet sand conditions.
Best of luck

No false signals at all, unless I just touched the sand or hit a little stone, the beach was very wet and almost impossible to dig, as the water and quicksand effect was too great, I think in future I will need a scoop on a stick type contraption. I did see your videos they are good, I just need to decipher all the information, and process it in terms of the Deus configs etc.

As I am still a newbe, im trying not to baffle my self too much by the tech, I want to try and get a bit of beach/land craft going first, understanding the lie of the land.

Since owning a Detector I have not blanked so im happy, just need to start getting into the older items, as to me that what it is all about, modern coinage is just a bit of petrol money, I want items that I can research.

Thanks for all the good advise

If you never had any ground balance problems and you were still maintaining a decent depth then don't change a thing ::g

Nice list of finds ... what would have been the date on yr canadian 10 cents? I found a 1923 canadian 5 cents over here in wales last week, so was wondeing if yrs would be the same era???

Ah yes to be honest I hadn't consider the depth too much, but looking back mot of what I did find was on the small stone into sand, the only real readings I got in the sand were the Meteorite type lumps of rocky iron stuff. the items I did find were not that deep at all 6-8 inches max I reckon.

Im struggling to re-size my pictures to add onto here even though I used image resizer it is still saying I need to be maxium 600 pixels wide.

Hi, A brave move to be out today on the beach, weather must be mildish down there in Bognor!
Way up north here, it's strong gusting winds, but a promising outlook regarding the 'spring tide' looms during the later week.
Just thought I'd mention the 'possible tankard rim' you found. Is it perhaps a 'B' as opposed to the figure 13 ? If so, you may have a silver mount bearing the Birmingham assay mark (anchor) for the year 1926.
Good luck with your learning curve for the Deus. Cheers.
A disservice is no service at all.

Mild yes in comparison to what we have had recently, Air Temp was about 8'C but the wind was gusting pretty strong, the missus did well think she survived 4 hours or so before going back to the Van to warm up.
I will have checked the "pewter item" again and there is a definitive 3 and not and B also the 1 is at least 5mm away from the three.

As im learning the Deus more and more from reading and watching videos and playing with airtests etc, i reslise now that when i was down the beach the other week i could have found lots more. Turns out the discrim was on something like 25, assume this is too high as everything i read tends to sway towards figures of around 4-8.
what would i have missed because of this?

I think is all depends on what type of beach you are metal detecting and what are you likely to find ?
My local beach is built up with sand each summer and you normally only ever find modern day coinage or jewellery so I will not be missing much ::g
If you are detecting a beach where old finds do come up then tweaking the discrimination to your preference is the way to go ::g
Best of luck
