you need to be aware that the Thames in the city area has been blasted ,blitzed and dug down to 6 feet back in the 80/90s by teams of guys with detectors and sieves ,and then the holes filled in.
you might be lucky but the odds are slim they missed anything .there was up to a dozen teams working the areas 24/7 .
this was before the mudlarks club existed and there were no depth restrictions ..
back in the late 80s in front of the tower was like the Klondike with dozens of gents digging massive holes all week long ! night and day ! many weapons were found which ended up in the Tower armouries or London Museum ....

You have a better chance if you do the South side, Back in the 80s we dug South side building sites but never bothered much with the foreshore. Up towards Blackfriars bridge was hard work, but i dug a Medieval Dagger only 3 or 4 inchs deep. Most serious Mudlarks moved on to other things after The Thames exchange building site about 1992. ::g

The Thames Foreshore is huge, and the quantity of Mud within it's massive tidal range is vast, it will continue to give up goodies for thousands of years, it is different with every single tide. I used to mudlark the foreshore on the South Side from Vauxhall to Wandsworth regularly, never detected because the one time I tried with my old Viking it just went bananas with a 10" coil on it - so much metal. But I still found lots of nice bits 'eyes only' including some lovely R Whites Ginger Ale stoneware bottles back to stone age artefacts. Great fun.
Recent finds: Papal Bulla of Clement V, Mary Groat, James 1st Scottish 20p, Republican Silver Denarius 130BC, Trajan Silver Denarius, Edward VII Hammered Shilling.
