All I want to say is well done to Mr Staples for doing everything right. A credit to the metal detecting hobby. Feel sorry for people affected by the loss.

Sad for the family and horrible for the finder.
Its better out of the ground and in your hand for the history or monetary value rather than left in the ground to rot doing nothing for anyone.

yes all genuinely very sad ... but forgive me for questioning why the police determined a body on the beach at 4am to be "not suspicious" ... if a body on the beach isnt suspicious ... i'd like someone to tell me what is!!!

For not suspicious read no foul play. In other words it is most likely either a suicide, sudden death, natural causes.

Very sad. :(

Have only just read this story and it is very sad to end in this way on a beech.I hope you are able to erase this from your mind over time as this strikes me as a very unpleasant experience for you. Seek help if you need to. Take care Pete.

One of my greatest fears when out detecting in secluded areas is coming across a body.A very sad situation and condolences to the family.

As a paramedic, myself and my colleagues get called to lots of sudden deaths. When the police arrive they look for signs of violence etc etc. a lot of cases are just sudden deaths where a person suddenly collapses due to heart attack, stroke etc. they report the death to coroner who will then decide if a post Mortem is required ! He will liaise with the family doctor and family who will give the coroner the full medical history. After his enquiries, the decision is taken ! If you die at home and you've not seen a doctor within 14 days or the doctor can't see why you've died (ie suddenly) again it is referred to the coroner. Maybe this guy who was found, was just happily walking on the beach and no one around him when he collapsed and may have had a medical history that his doctor knew about.
R.I.P. fella...
