EuroAce+Nel coil+wet sand!

Post by Christoph1945 »

With more and more people upgrading their coils for the EuroAce; I am wondering if you are finding any improvement in the performance of the machine on wet beach sand? Or is the problem still the same and you have to back off the sensitivity when moving onto wet sand?

I built a IDX copy and found the a bigger coil is much better on the dry sand but much worse on wet. The damp rocks just to left of the lighthouse at Talacre beach are almost imposable with my 27 cm DD but are just about doable with an 8" CC.

Seems the more area of mixed ground under the coil the worse the falseing and twitchy the detector is.

Any pools of water under the sand will always confuse any single frequency detector.

Even damp sand does not seem to cause too much of a problem.

Not tried a smaller coil but suspect the lose of depth by the coil size will be offset by being able to run at a higher setting.

Of course you are using a different detector and your mileage maybe different but the same principles should apply

Santa has confirmed that he will be bringing me a Nel Tornado coil in his goodies sack! I was just wondering if the Nel coil was going stabilise the EuroAce a little more when detecting on wet sand.

I do have a C-Scope CS4PI that I occasionally use when detecting on the sands at Talacre, but anyone who as ever used a CS4PI and detected on Talacre beach; they will know that it can be a nightmare. No discrimination on the detector and loads of scrap in the sands leads to one digging for Britain! :-L

Hello Christoph,
if you do a lot of beach detecting and are finding the Euro and the PI machine frustrating why don`t you sell them and buy a good second hand machine that will work to your advantage?True, the PI machines are untouchable for depth and ability in wet sand but like you say you will be digging to China..and no amount of fiddling and fettling will make the Euro behave in the more extreme conditions you find at the beach..Plus you could always get after market coils to boost performance..that way you could turn up at the beach, switch on and breeze along all day knowing the machine is doing what you want it to and you`re not wasting your hard earned time and cash..

just a thought...

You make some very valid points and I am going to have to reconsider my present detecting scope, as we move into 2014. I have been playing with the idea of buying a new detector that will suffice for both inland and wet beach sand but am presently strapped for cash!

Now, if the lottery or the Premium Bonds were to place a windfall into my pockets; perhaps I could go the whole hog and get me a 3030! I'm going to have to do some research, because my next detector will perhaps be the last one that I am able to buy. :-SS

By adding another coil it makes no odds what the make of the coil is,you are not going to help with the initial problem of the wet sand, infact by using the bigger NEL coil it could make the problem worse.

Detecting on the dry sand then that coil/detector combination will work very well as not only will you gain depth but also have discrimination as well and then use the C-Scope just for the wet stuff till you can afford a machine that will do both.
Equinox 6'',11'' and 15'' coils.
Deus 2 9'' coil.
Minelab GPX 14'' and 18'' Coiltek coils.
Fisher TW-5 twin box.
Nexus MP 13'' coil.
Nexus SE dual 9'' coil.
Whites TDI Pro 20'' coil.

I hope that the Nel gave you some improvement on the dry sand areas? X:)

Yes it does. I've used it on margate beach, dry sand with great results. It's just crap on any wet sand /stone.... Great on pasture too.

Ok; I now fully understand that replacing the standard double d coil with the Nel Tornado will not bring any improvements to the EuroAce on wet sand but I can expect some improvement on dry sand and pasture. Knowing that the EuroAce has the habit of indicating that rusty iron is a good target; I am wondering if the Nel coil improves this and you find your self digging less
rusty iron? :-SS

I found a quicker sweep speed helps with discrimination. (don't forget I am using a different detector)

Find target at normal sweep speed. Then test at a quicker sweep. Also found that if it's long and thin iron like large bolt or nail that if you swing at 90 degrees to its length then there is no tone where as if you swing down it's length it sometimes breaks through and gives a tone. I still dig a few just to check and it's always been iron.

Depends on the ground also I have dug a few nails and if I retry at home the detector does not make a sound.
