I am still using factory settings on account of not knowing what each of the different settings are for, (and embarrassingly dont know how to store my own progs yet ... not that i would know what to set up anyway) ... that said went on stubble today the fast mode (3) and was hitting lots of good sounding iron (I am plagued by iron - the machine loves the stuff) ... and came away with a few coppes and a cartwheel. I had the impression that the machine lacked depth ... anyway when i switched to GM (mode 5 I think) the signals almost disappeared, and when i did get a target the signal was fairly indistinct compared to fast mode. I've also noticed on rallies that other Deus users usually have many more finds than I get..
I will be out again on Thursday and was wondering if anyone has any tips...

Not sure i can help, however im seeing a lot of posts and comments saying that the "deus" finds a lot of iron, it does because its a metal detector!!, by using and understanding the machine (sort of!!!) im digging no iron, as i feel the "deus" easily tells you what you signal could be, just try different settings an give it your best shot at reading what you hear, good luck. I always like to run my Deus with zero discrimination so as to obtain maximum depth. I find I can ignore most iron simply by listening for that low iron grunt signal and then check that low iron grunt with the read out numbers on the control panel. I find if the numbers are showing say under 20 with that low grunt signal then you can bet its iron or some other trash.
Saying that as with most other machines, some iron will give a dig-able signal because maybe of the size and shape of it and you just have to dig it. But if its a low grunt signal with low numbers on the control panel I now feel confident I can ignore it and walk on past.

XP Deus 5.2
Minelab Vanquish 540 Pro
Garret Ace 250
I dig, you dig, we dig, he digs, she digs, they dig. ......
...OK, It's not a beautiful poem, but it's very deep.

Thanks for the tip ... so I am now going to try fast with zero disc and freq as low as possible ... I am not sure what all the other settings are for yet... but hopefully will pick up as I go along.

It all comes with practice and experience and you will eventually master the problem 90% of the time.
You will never stop buried holed and circular iron from fooling the machine thats life.
I use discriminate at 3 and its about right for myself and my programme and method of detecting.
Have you noticed that sometimes you will dig out iron that has fooled the detector and when you pass the coil over it again while on the surface there is a difference from same piece of ferrous.
It something that we just have to live with.
What I hate is foil, but even this can be overcome most of the time by understanding what the Deus is telling us by a mixture of sound and the numeric readout.
Off to the fields again while the sun is out.
Jerry.

From everything I have read and my own experience just use the factory settings! Their are only 2 setting which greatly change how the device works from what I understand and those are the frequency and discrimination but out the box the detector works great imo.
I suspect you will find the problem is more with how your swinging the machine than the settings as an example i went on a club dig a few Sundays ago on a well done site. The last time I went there I found nothing but this time I came away with 3 roman and 1 hammered. The trick I found was a very slow and steady swing, when I first turned up I was going my normal pace but found nothing and only on slowing down did I find the objects.
Anyway just my thoughts

many thanks for all your helpful advice ... well i got to the field where i found loads of stuff with the AT pro last year so i know stuff is there ... went into Deus fast ... set freq to 4 and disc to zero ... and it was as if i was some sort of fairy waving the wand into thin air... so went back to the factory settings for Fast... and the finds started comong ... nothing spectacular but finds all the same.
I will try and lower my swing speed ... but there does seem something counter intuitive about doing this ... that said I will give it a go.
Thanks everyone .
