Anyone detect on Spurn Point?

Post by Martin B »

I have Crown Foreshore permit, and am looking at popping over to Spurn Point this weekend to have a little go. I love Spurn anyways as its got masses of history, loads of stuff to explore and great wildlife.

However. The Crown Foreshore map seems to show that the estuary side of the peninsula is Crown, but not the seaward side, and then Crown again from the old Godwin battery northwards (about level with the Bluebell and the carpark). Spurn is still a very active place, with the ABP Pilots station, VTS station, and the RNLI station, plus the nature reserve.

Does anyone on here regularly detect at Spurn? If so, what additional permissions have you sought for the seaward side? Im particularly interested in seeking a permission from the nature reserve for one section that has history that has intruiged me for some time

As far as I can make out Spurn is a National Nature reserve so probely totally out of bounds.
Hopefully someone will put you right on the crown foreshore bit.

How have you done at Goodwin sands? Have you been around the old gun mounts.

My old Dad served at Spurn point during WW2 on the bofors guns. So he and his mates might have left a bit of rubbish around. He said it was a very lonely place.

Bugger. Though thought it might be. I knew the 'land' for want of a better term, was under control of the YWT, as ive dealt with them before (I have a future project on Spurn with them in planning) but hadnt yet had chance to check everything out. Kind of limited when on nightshift!

We'll concentrate on the beach from the Bluebell and the Godwin battery northwards. To be honest, with the erosion along that side of the coast, and compared with the seriously shifting nature of the peninsula itself, its probably the better bet anyway. That said, the point is always worth a visual survey (only with it being 3 mile long - dont find yourself late for getting back whilst in the company of a newly qualified Army PTI, as I did!!!)

Its kind of a toss up between that section of the coast or south of Humberston, towards Donna Nook

Hoping my Ace 250 arrives in time!

After contacting the YWT I now have the boundaries of the nature reserve and SSSI, and know where I can detect to the north, which will be fine for our purposes on the day.

I have been told however that the YWT visitor center on Spurn has a collection of items that have been found on the reserve in the past, so will probably pop in and have a look. Who knows, face to face, there might be a 1000-1 chance of a permission! :D :D

After some discussion with the YWT concerning boundaries, I now know the full extent of both the nature reserve and the SSSI. Unfortunately, between them, and the next SSSI north, it leaves only a very small section of beach open as Crown Foreshore,

The chart can be seen here -

Chart is shared here by kind permission of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. I would attached it as an image but its too large

Whether I still head to Spurn this weekend I dont know, but its one of our favorite places anyway, so we may still go there

The SSSI appears to go up and beyond the north of the map. I wonder how far? I am driving up there this morning. Might call into the YWT office and ask around. It seems to me that the YWT completely conflicts with the Crown Map. Makes you wonder how useful and up to date the Crown maps actually are. Thanks for sharing this map.

yes the two are confusing. The Crown Map for a start is in a silly pdf format, and impossible to work out the proper scale from, and of course shows only what is nominally Crown - nothing of leases or special use!

Im guessing that the section of SSSI at the very top of the map is a different one to the one covering spurn, this is possible as just up the coast there is the Easington Gas Terminal, and im sure quite a bit of the beach there will be in private hands at least.

But I make it just under 300m of Crown Foreshore between the two, not really much to go at!

Why all these official things are not marked on regular 1:25000 OS maps is beyond me!
