[quote="Glenfiddich"]I would say neither as you already pointed out that you wanted a beach detector and as I myself and Old Jeffers already pointed out that the Garrett Ace 250 is NOT GOOD on wet sand or black sand :( and I should know as I have a Garrett Ace 250 and one of the reasons that I upgraded to a Minelab X-Terra 705 was that I wanted to do some beach work in the black and wet sand.....

How did you find the Ace 250 on wet grass Glenfiddich ?
Garrett Ace 250

First finds:

1. 17c spur buckle on very first 'ding'
2. 1987 1p piece
3. stone / pottery ( we can't decide)
4. a LOT of fun.

Good advice seems hard to find! I thought it would be a wise move to get people advice on MDs before i buy, it all seems to be mixed views on the Ace 250 some people say its ok to use on blacksand as long as you lower the sensitivity others say not good at all, i am so confussed on what to buy!! ~x(

Any machine can be used on wet sand, but at a cost.
To drop the sensitivity to such a level to be stable on wet sand might render the machine into a few inches below the surface type detector.
This is obviously not good if you are searching for older deeper finds.
Beach detecting is the bane of manufacturers, hence why the Pulse induction machine was invented, again this comes at a cost, they have no discrimination so it is a huge learning curve to train your ears to hear the subtle differences in targets.

Welcome to the world of detecting.......

Sooooo - dropping the sensitivity decreases the depth ?

Not sure I realised that ! Another thing learned.

Its a bit more complicated than that.
Dropping the sensitivity enough on an Ace 250 to be able to cope with wet sand will affect the depth...
Dropping the sensitivity enough on a detector to cope with Falsing or high mineralisation will also affect the depth but to a much smaller degree....
Its the amount you drop it by, on wet sand a lot of machines will need to be very low sensitivity
As will running the sensitivity at maximum increase the falsing on a detector, and incorrect meter ID's

Where did i mention about going to the beach with my brother? i been with him a few times to farm land where i just watched him. Also i am looking to buy a MD thats why i have been learning about PI (Pulse Induction) as i will most likley be going to beaches rather than inland to get the right MD for the job. I have no experience whats so ever thats why i am here i apologise if you feel that i am NOT taken any of your "advice" but people have mixed appinons and experiences and i would like hear from them all before i make a decision when buying my first MD.

I know a fair bit about detecting.....4 years to be exact and 3 detectors later and I have tried to explain to you why you in your case should not get a Garrett Ace 250 as you want to primaliry do the beach as you already said, you go with your brother to the beach mostly at weekends but you want a shot too....who has the experience now :-/

It's your loss if you don't take good advise when its offered....especially when it is the second time around !! I know what I'm talking about because I also Have a Garrett Ace 250 !!
jani wrote:How did you find the Ace 250 on wet grass Glenfiddich ?
The Ace 250 works absolutly perfect on wet grass as in normal soil isn't mineralised so much as sea water is as the sea water contains a high level of salt which will interfere with your machine and unfortunately the ace 250 is not designed to be a wet sand detector but as water or the dew on your grass at home or farmers field is a lot less mineralised then it is not so much of a problem and it is also easier to turn down the sensitivity on minerised soil than it is on the beach on wet sand !!

This will be my first attempt at metal detecting so i could do with any advice on what MD would be a good entry level into the hobbie? also what MD would be best for the beach? as this is where il be going most weekends but will also be going down to the park as well.
