Hot rocks
Hot rocks
I was out for first time today with my new ctx was going well on the tadpole programme but by God this detector was picking up hot rocks all day I had to dig them all they sounded great .I never had this issue with my etrac .on a good note I did find a hammie
Does every one have this issue with hot rocks

Hot rock I can feel your pain !!!. I think with any rig your going to get them. what I find is if I'm in a area with a lot of hot rocks the majority of them usually sit on the top soil so what I do is use my foot just to sweep the top soil to have a look. normally however not all of them I can see which cuts down the digging. Just my way of dealing with them as I don't want to notch them out (ATpro) coz I'll miss the good stuff !!

There is one simple trick to CURE your problem. Remove tick from ENABLE GROUND BALANCE!!! It should be empty (unticked).

Depending on your ground hot rocks are a pain. Some people will never have a problem with them as not all ground contains them. There is a black soapy feeling rock that is impossible to do anything about. Even a tiny piece gives a nice sharp signal. Right high up in the discrimination range.
Coke also comes in a lot of different flavours. Adjusting the ground balance and discrimination you can ignore all but a small percent. This all comes at a cost of sensitivity to small or deep targets.
On my machine (Tesoro) the tone on most coke is different. Kind of a gentle lead in an out or a wobble in the middle rather than the nice sharp tone of a good target. I use this to eliminate most and just dig out the last few percent and still run my machine at 100%

I also do a little bit of astronomy and today was talking with a friend about the bright "fireball" meteor that was seen over Scotland earlier this week. They said that I should combine my two hobbies and try to find some meteorites while metal detecting as they fetch "good money" (no figure given).sanjuro wrote:Do you mean Coke ? (black light in weight) or Hotrock ie a stone that is magnetic or is less or more conductive than the soil it is in (thats why you get a signal)
Because I can not be bothered to type it just copied the following from a web site -
"Meteorites are usually categorized as iron or stony. As the name implies, iron meteorites are composed of about 90 percent iron; stony meteorites are made up of oxygen, iron, silicon, magnesium and other elements."
But one way to distinguish them is that they are normally magnetic .... so if you start getting signals from "a stone that is magnetic" it might well be worth checking it out to see exactly what it is !!.
Evan
PS: Yes I am aware that all "magnetic stones" are not meteorites.

Probably dug under 5 with the Etrac in the last few years and that's on my " bricksandcrap" site! Which require digging as there are nice things hiding....as for meteors most are probably sunk out of reach...bet there's some in the big pebble banks on some rivers or quarry washes...

Clint
best hotrock I ever dug was a great hoofing, sparkly (!) 10kg+ lump of lead ore....which I placed carefully in the hedge...on a permission I no longer have!
