XP Deus for newbie or not ? 1 week in ....

Post by dazza22 »

Hi everybody..

Just wanted to give my first impression of the XP Deus lite with WS4 and 11 coil.

First things first my wife order it from LP metal detecting . The service was first class and I would gladly recommend and use them again .

A little back ground on my detecting history . I started last year but only got out a hand full of times due to lack of time.
But got back into it again this year and have enjoyed every outing .I have been very lucky with permissions and have plenty of land to detect and it should last a life time (touch wood).
I started with the Garrett Ace 350 which I find easy to use and have no complaints .

But as with a lot of people found myself getting seduced by the XP deus . The weight was the big thing for me as I have joint problems . But the technology is also interesting too. Anyway to cut a long story short . I received my Deus a week ago .

So here the thoughts of a detecting newcomer .
Well I would not recommend the Deus lite as a first machine ! I feel if I had started with the Deus lite I would have struggled and may have fallen out with the hobby before I got started . If you had the full setup it may be OK for a beginner but its a lot of money to spend .
The reason is that on my sites the Deus is a little noisy and while I know you can control that . I do feel as a Learner clear “yes” or “no” signals makes life nice and easy.
Dont get me wrong I am very pleased with my Deus and would not swap it .But I am pleased I started out with the ACE350 and recommend that any new starter consider the Garrett ACE rang of detectors as the first stepping stone into the hobby .

I 3d printed a waist strap to hold the WS4controller so I can check the numbers until I get use to the sounds which works well and should aid my conversion to the Deus .
I have been using program 1and deus lite .I find its easy to pinpoint with the coil . And very light to hold .
The detecting performance is very good and as plenty as been written about it already, no need for my to add more .

Anyway just my opinion for what its worth .

Cheers Darren

p.s . I would have got the full setup if I had the funds.. ;;z So now I have started saving for the remote or maybe dig up some Saxon gold... X:)

Also a big thank you again to leisure-promotions.co.uk for the advise and service.

I would love to see your 3d wrist strap... how much does the technology cost, and how easy difficult is it to use? Many thanks in advance.

Hi

like mention you can buy XP version . But i have a 3dprint which i built from plans around 3years ago Costing about £200 .You can buy good ready made machines for around £200-300 .But they is a big learning curve involved in keeping the machine running etc.
I enjoy CNC designing so had a go at making the control holder . It not as slick as XP version but I only put about 3hr in to the design .Plus I only had a limit supply of flexible filament .
If I make another I would redesign about half of it and print in black too. But not complaining as it works well ,if not very good looking lol...

I would have purchase XP waist strap but after speeding around £700 , dont think my wife would go for another £25 ;;z ...
cheers Darren

yes agree its weight is great ...
as for depth , last time out I found a small about 10mm button at around 6-7" which I thought was pretty good ?
But I am a newbie so I wont pretend to know whats good and bad.

I have four detectors, including the Deus. I have never had a depth issue with any of them. The simple fact is that if the target is tiny and over 10" down you are unlikely to find it with anything. I was with Paul when he found that Saxon hoard over two feet down... with a Deus & 9" coil. A big target, wrapped in lead.
I honestly believe that any machine can find any target, so don't get caught up in the childish "my machine is better than yours" merry go round, that way you will spend a fortune and probably not find any more.
Whatever machine you choose, get to know it thoroughly, LISTEN to what it is telling you, your ears are far better than any digital read out.
I have a tiny corner of a field that I keep going back to... each time I think that I have totally hammered it, I hear a new variance on a tone and go back and do it again. That small corner is still producing for me after two years!!!
In my opinion Most finds are within 7" of the surface, regardless of the machine that you use. Most finds get missed by poor technique. Watch the others at a rally, fast walkers, pendulum swingers and the rest. Develop your sweep to be low and slow with the coil parallel to the ground. Each swing should overlap the previous one. If you sit there and say shall I, shan't I, dig the target anyway! If it's a feint tone, dig it, even if your display shows no numbers, it may be small and deep! Ok, you won't cover the ground as fast, but you will find more good stuff than most!

Good review and advice .. Like you I started with the 250 and went to a Deus after 6 months .. Those machines are night and day in comparison .. I've been using the Deus now for over 2 years and I'm still learning it .. I do feel though that although the 250 is a good starting machine I wish I had jumped straight into the Deus as it talks to you, is so customisable and I wouldn't have wasted the cash .. You can pick up a good used lite now for £500 or Regtons do interest free credit.. £25 a month

It is as much the land and what it holds than having a "good" machine. A garrett 250 can be as good as a deus if the field holds lots of finds in the 4-6 inches.

sorry I disagree a 250 is no match for a Deus in many situations - I ran all sorts of tests with both and the Deus is a far superior machine especially in iron infested fields and busy, trashy sites i.e. the real world - not to mention that there are plenty of scenarios where you cant even detect with a 250 where you can with a Deus e.g. electric horse fences and fields with a lot of electrical interference from overhead cables

I agree that having a good site with plenty of previous activity is important but a 250 doesn't even come close to a Deus

I think everybody wright , in there own way.
i just think if i had started with Deus I think I may have struggle and given up. But i am so pleased now to own the Deus

But we are all different , and yes the field is the key in finding finds ,the technique and detector have to work but as we all know all branded machines do find finds...
