Deus settings for Roman field (only have 7 days permission)

Post by howard86 »

Hi all,

I've got a very limited permission (about max 7 days) on a field that in the past apparently did turn up some Roman coins. Apparently as well nearby was a villa but its under a farmhouse. The reason I've got so little time is the land is being sold off for housing to be built.
It's pasture, about 2 acres, maybe smaller and I'm looking to go there at the weekend as the forecast is good on both days.

My main query is does anyone have any tips by means of settings for the Deus. I normally use Gary's Hot 5 program as the reduced iron noise was less irritating, 12khz, gb on tracking.

My usual land is mostly pasture, with a few fields that get ploughed which I can go on anytime without phoning up to ask etc, so I don't worry about changing settings too often. But as this is only a really limited time permission maybe someone can offer some advice for it, bar the low and slow stuff :D

Thanks very much! ::g

I'm a novice with it I am sure, I've had it a year but don't do the whole recognise the tones stuff, I just dig everything above about 20 on the display, but pretty sure I miss a lot too :-/

A new programme will take time to get used to,
Stick with a prog that you are familiar with an know works for you, you'll walk away knowing you did your best without worrying if you could have tweaked it differently
You could get many suggestions but from people that have set them up on ground and progs they know work for them

Good luck any way ::g

Thanks Steve, that's completely true and I seldom ever use anything outside of the hot program so would be a bit counterproductive.

I've never been on a Roman field before so any little advice from anyone about what to look out for, be it what sort of range of tones would coins come in at, medium or high or etc. I know next to nothing about it. Most hammered pennies I've found were 60's ish on the display but I'm tone deaf when it comes to remembering the sounds it gave x;

dont look at numbers just go by sounds that is what hot programme for.
and coins are just coins they wont start making a different tone because your on a different site. The problem u may encounter is iron .Roman sites are notorious for been iron infesred so when u here the iron sound in hot slow down and check that area for small signals and you maybe lucky :)) :))

You could increase the second or third tone so it gives a higher pitch difference than standard ( if you run with two or three tones)
I run mine with tweaked tones, I'm still learning the Deus tones, getting better slowly
Digg the iffy signals, even taking a bit of the soil off might improve the signal, I'm sure you know the basics

Hi Howard. I've got two Roman permissions one of which gives loads of Roman coins. I use deus fast on my deus lite all the time now with disc set between 1-2 depending how much iron I want to hear. Freq 17 and full tones. I'm far from an expert but it really works for me. When you go over a Roman coin they sound nice both ways. Can't tell u you numbers( no remote) but they are recognisable.
All the best of luck. Really hope you find some nice bits.
Ps if I had 7 days I would get up early and be there before daylight ready to go and when ever possible. Then go to work.

Thanks for all the replies, very useful information :) ::g
The guy who previously dug there said all he'd got was iron but he also only used a 'basic' detector, what the means I've no idea :D so if iron is common that's at least a good sign though round here I swear they just threw junk and buried it anywhere that was flat :D

I'll keep my settings then, and the whole going by the tones thing usually doesn't mean much to me, as I said I dig anything that's not a really low grunt noise. Gets me plenty of junk but I'm not at an age where things like knees are a factor for digging everything thankfully :)

I will lower the discrimination a little too, and pretty much dig anything that doesnt sound mega low.

I'd get up earlier and go there but I think the owners house is literally right next to the field (I got permission through someone who already has permission there) so I'd not want to wake anyone up. I've got the whole weekend free from about midday on Saturday and likely a fair bit of Monday too (joys of being a tennis coach in winter, but a downer for income!).

Its possible if it is a "known site" that there will be archaeological trial trenching first before development so offer to help out on the spoil etc.

Your already used to Gary's hot so stick with it, I use that program all the time (great program).
I do change it a bit tho and what I do is change between frequencies (mainly 12 but 8 would give a bit more depth).
I only use a disc of 1, this just helps with the "ground noise" and you then hear everything under the coil.
I don't use tracking on a "definitely" Roman site as I feel that tracking can "track" the iron and give false signals (not sure how else to put that bit lol) so I use manual 90 to start and keep it to within a couple above of what the machine is telling me it is as I go.
And I up the Audio Response a bit (to 4/5) and what that does is make the small whispery signals louder, but you do loose the sense of depth of the item.
The way I look at it is I would rather hear it than than miss it.
I hope this helps a bit and good luck, I look forward to reading how you get on ::g ::g
This is only my opinions tho and I am in no way an "expert" :)

For the limited time you have, I would be prone to using a high discrimination programme (discrimination set at 30 or tone break set high) for the first day in a 2 tone program 8khz. I would quickly blast the field on the first day.

2nd day - disc set at 20 - Garys cold program 12 kHz 2 tone
3rd day - disc set at 10 - Gary's cold program 8khz 3 tone
4th day - disc set at 5 - Gary's hot program 18khz full tones
5th day - disc set at 5 - Gary's hot program 12 kHz full tones
6th day - disc set at 5 - Gary's hot program 8 kHz 2 tone
7th day - disc set at 10 - Gary's ultimate program 4 kHz

I know many would disagree with setting the discrimination so high but you haven't got time to be digging iron/hot rocks etc. The idea is to quickly blast the field for the first couple of days on an unknown field, identify possible hotspots and switch to hot programs to blast the field and then finish on a quick hoovering up of anything larger/deeper such as large relics/hoards! :D

Thanks again everyone! I'll give it some thought and see how it goes over the weekend. I'm not expecting to really find much if it's been dug before, but what with increases in technology and so on, there might be one or two bits missed (I'm hoping anyway!)
