Smaller coils

Post by dttone »

I've read a good bit on here and other forums about using smaller coils for trashy or iron infested sites.
Its looks like the sef 8x6 is the no.1 pick for lots of folks, but i see they also sell a 5” DD Search Coil (Excelerator 11 pro). Anyone got experience with this type?
NEL do the sharp and sharpshooter coils which do look good to me also.
( That's the beauty and problem with the internet...loads of choice & info to bamboozle me !) h;@

Would appreciate any thoughts on the 4 coils above.

I've toyed with the thought of getting a small coil for trashy areas, but to be honest if it is that bad I wouldn't bother searching it anyway. Maybe a detector that can pick out the nicer signals would be a better bet?

8x6 by far ::g ( not sure if its exactly the same but this is for ex11 ::g ) the iron wont bother you at all neither does hot rocks , dont use any discrim patterns and no iron mask.run in conductive . .now press detect 3 times - this should be edit mode, make the edit box small ! 1 pixel ! , now scroll this tiny box across to the left then scroll to the very top and x that pixel out ( top left pixel ).... now go get the goodies, listen for the low grunt - goodies ... high flutey - copper... high squeal or overload - iron... now get it maxed out in manual. keep the swing slow, it wont take long and you will have it just about mastered, hope it helps

Its just that this park has hundreds of years of historic use, but nowadays its a heaving mass of shredded cans and bottle tops. Not sure how the town council has got away with not picking up the litter before mowing the grass, but it must be going on for years at this stage. A real pity for us detectorists.. ;;z
I'm gonna get the sef 8x6 and even though I will probably mask out good targets , i will discrminiate out the can-slaw as I find it. All I can do I suppose. :-/

Small coils are a must for trashy sites like parke tec, must admit you are very lucky to have gained permission to be able to detect in a park, its very rare that folks can do that.

I use a SEF8x6 coil on my DFX and its a really nice coil, also use a 5'' DD coil on my T2 and the NEL Snake on my Trident11 Extreme, small coil are a must have item for really trashy roman/saxon sites,oh and parks if you can gain permission.
Equinox 6'',11'' and 15'' coils.
Deus 2 9'' coil.
Minelab GPX 14'' and 18'' Coiltek coils.
Fisher TW-5 twin box.
Nexus MP 13'' coil.
Nexus SE dual 9'' coil.
Whites TDI Pro 20'' coil.
