A trip to Worthing

Post by Apricot Lil »

Today we decided to take a trip down to Worthing, thought it would make a bit of a change from Seaford.
We managed to park up easily, right on the front and set off into the wind, with high hopes as always.
There was very little to be had, just the odd beep here and there but it didn't deter us as it was good to be out by the sea. We bumped into a fellow detectorist (just out for a walk without his detector) should have asked if he was member on here but completely forgot! So "Hello" if you are :D He suggested going closer to the pier, which we did. There were more beeps up that end but it was mostly tourist rubbish left behind (beer cans etc).
Here's pretty much the sum total of our finds:

The knife was literally lying on the surface of the beach quite near to the water's edge. No detector required there, just a pair of eyes.
2 penny coins...not quite enough for the petrol home!
Still, we had ice cream and a good walk so I'm not complaining. :))

Worthing can be a tough nut to crack. There is a long sea front and when the tides are very low (like now) You have a huge area to cover.

I thought Worthing had banned metal detecting and were actively enforcing it. Has something changed for the better? ::g

I wasn't aware of that. But while we were there a beach patrol vehicle went past us twice and didn't stop to tell us that we shouldn't be there.

Hi

Having looked into this as I frequently visit friends in Worthing, there are no council byelaws preventing metal detecting, so the council won't be interested. The foreshore below high water mark is Crown Estate - the pier section of Worthing beach isn't shown on their map as an area where metal detecting is permitted, so you might technically fall foul of them.

However, as they are currently reviewing the whole foreshore permit system (presumably also reviewing the current areas where detecting is allowed), it could be interpreted from their website blurb (below) that all Crown Estate foreshores are fair game at present (subject of course to using common sense and avoiding Local Nature reserves, AONBs, etc.).

"We are currently looking into the metal detecting registration process and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

In the meantime, you may metal detect on Crown Estate foreshore without a permit, but must read our terms and conditions here before doing so. Please note that you do not need to notify The Crown Estate that you have read these terms and conditions"

Whoops, my mistake. rl; We discussed it a couple of years ago and it was eventually established that detecting was OK.

I was down on the beach just west of Worthing on Sunday morning at low tide. Bit windy but still enjoyable...I found six coins...but all 2p coins.

Is someone dropping marker coins to see how the tidal currents are working? Lol

Before my time on the board Fred - but still valid :)

Could print out a copy of Worthing beach byelaws in case ever challenged by a jobsworth -

https://www.adur-worthing.gov.uk/media/ ... 437,en.pdf

- no mention there of metal detecting.

I guess you can similarly check up any local authority's byelaws before venturing on to the beach but in my view if it's Crown Estate and not private, go for it.

Up on the dry-ish sand near the high tide mark.

Could have been a coin spill but unlikely to be six 2p coins in one go!
