Depending on model.
Alkaline batteries will power the Explorer SE for up to 16 hours of constant use. The NiMH 1600 battery pack will power the detector for up to 16 hours of constant use and the NiMH 1800 battery pack for 20 hours.

Alkaline batteries will power the Explorer II for up to 14 hours of constant use. The NiMH 1600 battery pack will power the detector for up to 12.5 hours of constant use and the NiMH 1800 battery pack for 14 hours.

Correct me if Iam wrong.

I always understood that new rechargeable batteries needed to be recharged a number of times to reach their full capacity.

Happy Hunting,

Your old 1600 pack can be rebuilt without too much effort. And as modern cells have a decent capacity, 2400+ mAh, your newly-rebuilt pack should last 50% longer than the original. But if you're using the original trickle-charger, it will take 50% longer to fully charge it up, of course.

Took the detector out yesterday and it ran out after5 hours. Crawfords have been great and said charge it for 20 hours and then it should be fine, if not they will send me a new one. Has anyone else experienced this. I have an old 1600 battery and was thinking of opening it up to load with rechargeable cells, is this an easy job as im not that confident of doing it right. I had a lovely short cross cut half and loads of lead yesterday.
You do need to do a very long first charge. Once fully charged up an overnight charge should top up a full days use. That's how I used to do it anyway! :D Lithium batteries do apparently have a memory effect but it's no as bad as the original rechargeables were.

So why is nobody mentioning the RNB Lithium ML3100 batteries that fit all the FBS detectors. 50-60 hours use from a 2 hour charge. Come with their own charger and available on this MDF forums shop and Auction site at not much more money than Minelabs lesser Nimh batteries that take 8 hours to charge. I use them in my Explorer 2 and they last so long I forget to charge them. They can be given a little top up charge after a trip out. Theres no memory effect. We have versions to fit the Garrett AT series, the Minelab Excalibur and also most of the whites machines.
