George 111 Shilling

Post by Giz »

With low water at 4.15pm yesterday, I arrived at the beach at 2.00pm, deep cuts had formed close to the cliffs. Much better conditions than previous days, sunny and a tad warmer, a number of decimal coins, however no precious metal. After 2 hours made my way back to my van. As I was about to leave the beach I had a good solid signal, you would think ring pull as you know it must be dug. pleased I did as up came a black disc. I instantly new it was a silver coin, on further inspection it was to be a George 111 1820 shilling. This is my third George 111 shilling I have found in the last month. I tried cleaning the first one and ended up ruining it. I have uploaded both yesterdays and the second one. In my opinion these coins have fell from the cliffs and not been brought into detecting range due to sand loss. ta for looking. ::g

Hell 'Giz', Yesterday was a fine day for beach detecting and I bet your couple of hours were enjoyed. These shillings seem to be common finds but no matter where found, I don't think I've got one that's in good condition. Might be worth another session today, sun shining and blue sky.
Might even be tempted myself ::g Cheers ss47

Nice finds! just out of curiosity; what was your mistake with the 'ruined' one? would be good to know what NOT to do when i find one ;)

Hi HD. When I mentioned that I had cleaned (spit & foil) a beach found George 111 shilling on a previous post. A forum member whos name eludes me said that silver beach found coins do not clean well. Below is conclusive evidence. To be fair the original is not good, but recognisable, after cleaning well you draw your own conclusion. :D
