Two lead bullets for ID please

Post by epmg »

Two large old lead bullets, hollow, 14mm diameter, dug up at a Cornwall beach. The one on the right is more knocked about, but they could be the same ID. I'd guess 19th century? Thanks.

Look like 1853 pattern Enfield bullets but exact measurements are everything with ammunition IDs. [81/]

Thanks Fred, that sounds spot on. The 1853 Enfield rifle musket bullet diameter is given as 0.550 inches which equals 13.97 mm, so is pretty well 14 mm as I measured here, while the calibre is given as 0.557 mm= 14.7mm. Obviously the calibre has to be slightly more than bullet diameter, but not sure if there is any generalisation for the difference?
