Looks like a German 7.92mm?. What lettering is there on the bottom?

Interesting find, don't forget to have a look at the post in the military ordinance section about dealing with possibly live ammunition ;)

hammyman or yeti should be able to give an ID on that coin as it is abouy 4% visible, amazing if it IS a coin after all and that it got missed under the bigger signal, Liam :)) :))

Hi Fishy,

an interesting find you have there ; if the percussion cap has not been punched by a firing pin, you have a live round there. :-O

Taking it home puts you on the wrong side of the law. Cleaning it puts you at risk!

What detector were you using when you found it and what was the location. If it is a German round, it may be a pointer to something else!

Stay safe

Markings on the bottom,

4" (which is the case length) - 5 - T -W (any translation on that?)

Its live and the police are on the way to collect :D

Hi Fishy,

sure is live by the look of it. If it is german I would have expected it to be spent! Because it is live, and if it is german, it may be a pointer to something more interesting. Are there any records of german aircraft being shot down within a mile or so of your find location? Working the same area with a PI machine may throw up some more interesting finds.

Hi Fishy. It's not a 7.92, and it's not German. It's an American .50 caliber round, made at the Twin Cities Ordnance Plant, Minneapolis.

...oh, the markings on the base represent the year it was manufactured (1945), and the manufacturer (Twin Cities Ordnance Plant).
