Neil - Bottom right.....but I can't see it too well. Just going off the length really :)

Cordite is very similar to spaghetti but thinner. When dry, it will still 'fizz' quite nicely if lit. If you light a bundle of it, it will 'whumph', so be careful with it. Sea water has NO effect on its combustibility.

1931 eh.......very nice :)

The 1 inch Nordenfelt gun was an early rapid firing light gun which was designed to defend large warships against fast moving torpedo boats in the late 1860s to the early 1880

Hi Pete some nice finds you have there. Has the beach reopened or are they still working ,went down there the other week and they still had the barriers up just past the pier so could not check that part. Good luck with your future finds.

Yes mate, most of the beach is out of bounds, barriers due to start coming down in the next few weeks, all that sand they pump on the beach really does cut down the target count! :( .
Hope they dredge up an old plane wreck or something interesting!

someone was asking for more detail regarding these bullets, possible mauser rounds, the one on the tape is longer than the others but appears to be same calibre, although I have not measured them accurately.

Mauser rounds ? They look like standard 9mm to me......except the funny one with the two grooves....not sure what that is, but william can't be far off with that suggestion.

The .50 bullets were used in the Lancaster, Lincoln, Wellington bombers and the Hurricane and Spitfire. Some Spits were fitted with the 20mm cannon and a few aircraft in 6 squadron were fitted with a 40mm cannon for action against enemy tanks, hence the name, Tin Openers was attributed to the squadron and their emblem is a flying tin-opener. The larger bullet looks like a 20mm

I am sorry but I need to correct you.
AnthonyJay wrote:The .50 bullets were used in the Lancaster, Lincoln, Wellington bombers and the Hurricane and Spitfire.
I am afraid that is not correct. Only the Lincoln had them installed as standard, and they didn't go operational until August 1945. A very few Lancasters had 50cals fitted, but it was very few. Wellington bombers didn't have them, nor did the Hurricane or Spitfire, apart from a few experimental exceptions.

Indeed the Spitfire was fitted with 20mm cannon, and a very few in the desert (mark Vb) had the 40mm. Hurricanes IID had 40mm as standard and 6 Sqn flew them, not Spitfires.

I am sorry but it is nothing like a 20mm in length, breadth or appearance.

Sorry.....only just seen that I hadn't answered this :)

Yes, they did. Curiously though the headstamps look different to 'normal' 50cals as they actually say 'CAL 50' on them. If you find one with this on, it's a safe bet it was lend-lease ammo. :)
