it would make alot of sence for it to be a 25lbr case lid as there is alot of 25lbr shrapnel fuses ect and we have found three of them coplete they were obviously fired and were completely hollow and stuck in the ground at a 45 degree angle obviously we were very carefull to check that they were harmless but have still only got one in the house that is completely cleaned out.
Nice ! Base ejecting smoke rounds
They carried 3 smoke canisters that they blew out the back just before landing, making a nice smoke screen. Keep an eye out for the base discs.......brass discs the same diameter of the internal bit of the shell and usually WD arrow marked.....they will be near where you found the shells
These are indeed perfectly safe but be careful. They often used a couple of smoke rounds as 'spotter' rounds, then belted the area with HE. Just because you've only ever found these hollow base ejecting rounds doesn't mean that's all that's there.....you could stumble on a dud HE

It's too small for a lifting eye, my guess is that the OP can't even fit his finger through the hole!frogeye wrote:The item with the holes looks like a lifting "eye" , a point at which to a lifting hook can be put in .

Nope. This......
Note the War Dept arrow and date, and the discolouration around the edge where it 'sat' in the base of the shell.

im having trouble uploading the picture it says the image is too many pixels???
just worked this out myself. Right click on the picture file and then left click on "open with" and choose 'Picture manager. when it opens up there will be an option marked 'picture' on the toolbar. click on this this choose "compress" (mine gives a few options but the best one is 'webpage')
that done, just save it and have another go. the pixel sizes should now be ok to upload the image
I use windows vista so you may need to tweak things if your set up is differentge
