A bit of a puzler

Post by Christoph1945 »

I came across this object last year. Despite the spade in the photograph, I didn't dig it up! It was located well along the beach, above the high tide line. Just sitting at the foot of the dunes; it looked as though the elemnts had uncovered it. It struck me that it was far to heavy for the sea to have washed it up! The following week, it was gone.

At first I thought that it looked like a hub off some large machine but a friend said it looked more like a capstan. I later wondered if it could be a pipe cleaning PIG.

OK, I know I'm going on a bit and I may have posted this in the wrong forum but I am wondering if it could be military in origine?

Thanks John. I have no idea how this may have got there. I know that a lot of nails and screws drift onto the beach in wood. The wood later rots away, leaving the nails in the sand. Probably that is how I came across my copper ship's nails the other week.

I think that this item would have been far to heavy to have drifted in with wood. Its a pitty that it has dissapeared..I could have obtained more photographs and taken some measurements.

Actually I have a nice collection of coppernails.. I find some every week.. mostly broken.. But you have to have in mind, that I live on a Island, and 300 years ago most houses was build form driftwood and werck. Here is a funny one - like a bull s horn.. copper broken.
