Disused MOD firing range

Post by ghostman »

Where I grew up there was a MOD firing range, this was in use from the 1940's through to the late 70's. As kids we used to go every weekend, in those days the empty case's and often live rounds were just left where they fell, we'd collect the case's and the village shop owner bought them off us for scrap. Now that it's closed, its now being used by the local Farmer for grazing. My question is, is it now just classed as farm land, needing only the land owners permission or is there some other law where the MOD still have a say in things.? Also it backs on to the shore, Morecambe Bay, and very often we came across mortars stuck into the sand, I don't know if the MOD ever swept the area before closing the range, so the possibility of finding corroded mortars may still be a reality !!

I would speak to the farmer and ask him if it's his land or not. If it has been given back to the farmer then I would have thought it would have been made safe. Can't imagine the farmer would be to pleased if one of his cows suddenly exploded :))

It has nothing to do with the farmer I'm afraid. It all boils down to whether or not there are laws still covering the use of the land as a firing range. Look on this site to find out if it is, but I strongly suspect that, given the year it closed, it still will be covered. That means that everything on or in the land area used as a range is the property of the MoD and taking it away will result in a hefty fine or even imprisonment. And yes, I HAVE seen this happen before .......... it isn't a 'idle threat' !!! :) :) :)

Looked on the site and there's no mention of it anywhere. It was at Crag Bank, Carnforth Lancs.
