Hi people, went out today for a couple hours on a second world war p.o.w camp...this site has in the past produced lots of military finds, mainly british i may add, cap badges, tunic buttons etc but today i got a realy deep signal and out popped a german soldiers dog tag,i don,t own a camera nor is there one on my phone (old git) but the inscription reads NSCHB.BIL.5221URK...2nd line reads JANOW 10410.......I,ve shown it to my neighbour who is a 93 year old ex german para he confirms it as a dog tag and he thinks the name janow could be polish,i do know many foriegn nationals served in the german military.from the inscription can any of the military buffs work out the mans regiment etc,,,,,,thanks in advance....BAZ
There are certian websites dedicated to this sort of thing. Alot of them are based around areas such as stalinsgrad and returning german remains to german soil. In order to cover the cost of this they where auctioning off other items found. Anyway getting back to the point they have quite a bit of access to the records so could be worth contacting them.
Also is the disc complet?

A large number of foreign nationals served with the German army, most in specially formed SS units. Unusual to get a name on a German tag though. I'll give you more info on it later when I get home. Nice find

Should read as Nachschub Battalion 522 Turk.baz1sue2 wrote:Hi people, went out today for a couple hours on a second world war p.o.w camp...this site has in the past produced lots of military finds, mainly british i may add, cap badges, tunic buttons etc but today i got a realy deep signal and out popped a german soldiers dog tag,i don,t own a camera nor is there one on my phone (old git) but the inscription reads NSCHB.BIL.5221URK...2nd line reads JANOW 10410.......I,ve shown it to my neighbour who is a 93 year old ex german para he confirms it as a dog tag and he thinks the name janow could be polish,i do know many foriegn nationals served in the german military.from the inscription can any of the military buffs work out the mans regiment etc,,,,,,thanks in advance....BAZ
The battalion came into existence on 26 August 1939 in Military District XVII. The battalion was set up as Supply Battalion 522 for Army troops in Vienna with 3 companies. First, the Battalion was used in Poland. In 1940 the battalion arrived in the Western Front. 1941, saw the battalion being used as part of the 12th Army during the Balkan campaign. This was followed by some time in southern Russia with the 17th Army used. From December 1941, the battalion deployed in the General Government. In 1943 the staff of the battalion was stationed in Kielce. On 22 April 1943 there was also a reclassification of the battalion into 6 companies. The 3rd Company was issued, and became the new 3rd and 4 (Turk.), and a fifth and 6 (Wolgatatar.) company. In September 1944, the Turkestan battalion's companies were then inducted into the Janow Turkvölkisch-Caucasian training and replacement battalion. 1944/45 the battalion was with the Seventh Army of Army Group B. The war ended for this unit In the Bonn area.
In summary, the tag you have found dates from the September 1944 rebuilding of this unit.
Nice find!

Could also be worth adding that the 10410 number was the owners personal roster number, giving you some idea of the number of bodies in this supplies unit.

Given that he probably joined the unit quite late in the war it is impossible to say for sure where he was from. Unless you are direct relative to the owner of the tag you won't be able to find out much more about him.
Good luck on this site, looks very promising!

the dog tag and other artifacts have been found in the outlying fields immediatly surrounding the camp, i,ve tended to shy away from the actual inside camp perimiter due to the vast amounts of iron in the ground. i think the nissen huts must of been bulldozed flat and buried after 1947 when the camp closed. but now i,ve got the deus i,ll get in there and hopefully get better target seperation in deus fast.....p.s.... the other week i found in one hole, 2 keys and metal disc inscribed ,..CAMP 2,DRYING ROOM, ..hh...BAZ
The camp itself will be full of finds. Buttons, badges, dog tags, old toiletry tubes, food lids......all sorts of stuff. Get your discrim set right and you should be able to cut out the background chatter. I don't search them too often, (concentrate on airfields and old ranges more), but when I do, it always surprises me how much stuff is in the ground from the POWs.
Oh, just one thing. I went to one POW camp and found virtually nothing. After doing a bit more research online, I discovered the old huts were bulldozed in the late 80s and the rubble 'spread over the entire area to give a level area to grass' by the local council !!!! No wonder I didn't find anything......I had 2 foot of rubble to get past !
