First time out properly heres what i found and a cartridge

So today we took the ace 150 for its proper first try on the beach at Scarborough south bay.
After a few teething problems I got the settings to where i was happy (jewelery sensitivity 3 bars).
My daughter and I were there for around 3 hours and managed to find almost one of every coin nothing pre decimal but that will be to come later hopefully and my best find and I was so buzzing at this (it isn't much but i was over the moon as i prefer this sort of thing to modern coins),was what i believe to be a Winchester 38mm spl revolver/semi automatic pistol bullet casing.No after googling this they are apparently used mostly by the us forces up to around the early 1990's, this makes me wonder was it doing on Scarborough beach are they something I would expect to find in the uk?
Also would the casing be empty when fired because this one doesn't seem to be, looks to have the tip inside and if so would not want to end up having it explode on me

That's a good result for a proper first try with your Ace .
My first machine was the Ace 250 and i loved it, still have it as a back up.

I bet the tecting bug has bit you now and we will see more finds from you in the future

If the headstamp at the bottom has a dent in it then it's been fired. There might be some cordite left inside, but we can't tell unless you show a photo of it.

Generally if it's been struck it is safe.

Hi bibbys0, the photo is not to clear so to help I have posted what to look for below. If it is unfired then it can still cause harm and it needs to be handed in to the local police or if you do not feel safe doing that give them a call and they will collect it for disposal.

Hi thanks mind now at rest has definitely been fired thanks for the clear pictures as its the same as the fired picture unclear as to what is inside it though still wont poke around just in case don't wanna blow my fingers off

the funny thing with me is iv found every modern coin ..but never found a fifty pence piece

looking at the photo from above of the cartridge case it appears that it could be the bullet in the case as it would probably be a FMJ so may be mistaken for brass as it has been in the ground for a while, don't ask me how as I can see it has been fired but stranger things have happened.

It could be a fired round reassembled for use as a Drill Round i.e. a dummy inert round used for practice.

The object inside is definitely brass or copper would love to get it out to see but think I will probably leave it alone.
I have just been to see the farmer has a few areas for me to detect on but he knows plenty of others he is going to ask for me so will be making my first visit one day next week.I now have the bug for it once again and already thinking of upgrading, when i decide the time is right no doubt will maybe need as bit of help choosing as my knowledge of detectors is pretty poor and it will be over to you guys

It it has been struck then it was a duff round, as the bullet is still in the bottom of the cartridge. It will do no harm. Hope you get some more interesting finds next time out.

Thanks all I took the plunge hands shaking and pulled the bit inside out and it was as I thought the end.I then placed it back in the end drilled a little hole through the top and have now a rather nice keyring which I will have with me at all times to remind me lol.
Thanks all for your replies new hunt starts wed weather permitting on 12 acres, I expect to find lots more bullets etc as apparently was used as a fire-ring range many moons ago and is now used as a camp site so lots of old and new to be found hopefully
