After hundreds of hours of practice this is what I do. (for right or wrong)

(Fast program)
(change)
Descrimination 0 (expert full tones)
Iron Volume 4
Manual GB 90
If there's loads of iron coming through keep raising the Descrim but I'd never go higher than 5

Take the controller off, once set up.
My last hammered came through at 59
Dig every good signal (end of story), the iffy signals buzz/beeps that's down to judgement that's been gained by experience. Try lots of iffy signals is my advice, you may be surprised. Expect a low chatty iron buzz, buzz, buzz, buzz as you sweep the detector across the ground. I don't mind it anymore (I used to hate it!). You just get to hear everything. I do believe the high reactivity and 18kHz is not the deepest setting to search but I do think it's the most accurate method of searching through unbelievable amounts of iron that's on nearly every site I go to. There's mineralization, iron contamination everywhere! If you insist on using the controller don't let the numbers take preference over the audio. WHAT YOU HEAR is paramount. The I.D. definitely becomes erratic or unreliable for deep smaller targets. Plus you are more likely to ignore signals when you get tired, hot or frustrated from a poor initial hunt.

The most important point, that I don't think's been covered is: it has to be in the ground in the first place, so the site is everything. If you have the good fortune to find a productive site: HAMMER IT! :))

I wish you all the best on your next hunt ::g ::g

Also a newbie with a Deus 1 month in. Used a Garrett AT Pro fir two years before the Deus.

Programme wise I use Relic mode with discrimination set to 4.5 for clean land. For trashy areas I sacrifice depth and use Gary's Hot programme. To check iron I use basic 2.

The relic mode signals tend to be similar to the AT Pro I.e Vicky penny at 86 ish however in the hot programme I find the signals to be about 10 higher I.e Vicky pennies come at around 96.

Hi I don't use the control box thing I turn that off and only dig by the sounds mostly all two-way sigs and faint scratchy sigs have turned out to be the deeper finds,Mostly search in deus fast 18khz with the disc up to 30 and in full tones work very well for me and I find lots a small finds quit deep have good selection of hammies from digging the faint iffy sigs which if you looked for numbers there would not be any and you would walk over them. ::g

Hi Jon

I'd agree with what has been said above. You won't always get a TID that seems like a diggable one with even very good targets. I think this may have to do with things like size and shape of the good target, and what other targets are close to the good one. I got some hack gold which, had I only looked at the TID (no number at all), would still be in the ground. That one was in the same hole as iron nails, but the shape of the audible signal was what made me dig. Hammies and lots of my Romans often come up on very low TID numbers too. I do look at the remote but mostly to monitor ground balance (I search in tracking with full tones and no discrim), or to change freq (just have same settings other than freq on next slot) as this often helps me check a signal.

Nothing wrong with digging most signals from time to time to keep your ear in. I think with practice you can pretty much predict shape and size of many targets too. There are odd things that you won't want to dig, such as what often get called hot rocks, but are old fire cinder things spread on the land - not metallic but give a signal: For me they give a predictable jittery lowish tone and if I do look at the screen, they come in at about 33. The sound they make is so different to a little Minim or something though, that I know not to dig. If in doubt I scrape the surface soil with my wellie and see if it's still there or not, or lift up the coil a few inches - the signal drops out.

Hope something there helps :D

Great machine; we are always learning with them! ::g

Its not just about the numbers ... but the size of the signal ... a very loud, ill defined, and long 96 ... it will probably be modern junk... but a sharper, shorter more solid 96 could well be something a little more nice,,,

Basically until you can get to the point that you can predict what the object will be ... with a good degree of certainty, then dig the lot!!!!

I have no idea how the electronics of the Deus work but it seems to me the audio signal is more accurate than the visual/numbers.
I usually have disc between 0 and 5 and dig every decent tone. Even if numbers are saying 2,3...10..20, if audio was a decent two way beep, at the very least, take a few inches off and recheck.
Also, some previous threads have said the lowest tone settable on the Deus is 200hz, I think that is different on the newer ones. I set lowest tone at 100hz. It makes iron sound like a very deep but gentle "don't dig me" rather than a little dog yapping "dunno, may be iron" over and over.
Have you tried changing audio break points? You could set them at lowest tone 0-5, audibly higher but still a low tone for 5-30, nice high tone for 30-96 and perhaps lower again for 96+.

Coke often comes out at 25 to 36. A large wet piece of coke can give a lovely signal (at least to my ears) and shows around 75.
