Notch in GB and Disc - who uses it and whats your thoughts..

Post by murkey »

So I have been having some thoughts about applying a bit of notch to the low numbers in the small /medium iron range say 1-12 and dropping the discrimination to 0 so the Deus will be in all metal hoping this will help with depth and iffy targets, hopefully the ear bashing can be toned down a bit by the iron notched out.. :-/

Also have been thinking of adding a range of ground balance notch as I search in tracking and sometimes it drifts into the mid 70's which makes the coil quite sparkey so was thinking of a range of 80-90 and let the tracking work in this range..

Many of you Deus owners use any of the notch settings and if so what do you think about it :-/

Hi l do not use notch myself, l like to hear what's there. I mainly use the hot program as l find this is good on the land l go on. As for the GB l have one farm the numbers change fast on me one moment its 87 -90 the next its down to 76. On this l put the deus into tracking. But most of the time its in normal 90 mode l just keep an eye to make sure the ground does not drop below 85. As l understand 5 is the
Limit to make sure the depth does not suffer loss. ::g only had mine 6 months so still learning this remarkable detector.

If you start notching things out you could start missing targets, its used alot in the US but my way of thinking is that i dont want too miss much so if it gives a decent signal it has to come out.I am not saying folks dont use it but its not used as much as say across the pond.

Possibly because we have so much history and our targets are varied, but as they are say just looking for modern finds on tots lots and parks then they start notching out alloy can slaw and silver foil, that of course is not good for us as we can and will miss things like silver hammered coins. So hence this is the reason i dont use notching of any kind and also as little discrimination as possible as well.

From what I have read a lot of us UK Deus users don't use notch or many of the other settings as lots of us don't entirely understand the machine 100% so just opt for standard programs or say like Garys Hot which is very good but I would like to know machine better than just recommended programs...

So back to Notch - People say about missing good targets if using notch but this isnt necessarily true, if you notch between 1-12 this gives a few numbers of notch blurring to so 15, anything under 15 is generally iron so this shouldn't be a problem plus the benefit you are using the Deus in all metal only blocking out the iron noise should let some more of the iffy signals become sweeter and more likely to dig..

The advantage I think of notch is that the iron sound is filtered out after the signal has been received so not affecting depth, whereas just 1 on the discrimination will affect depth as the Deus discriminates this out in the ground plus you will still hear lots of iron..

The best of both worlds is to use no notch and no disc so completely all metal but on most farmland your ears will be tortured by a wall of sound..

So now I'm just running a few programs next to each other to understand notch v's disc better, both programs the same but one having disc set at 5.0 - notch 00 and the other disc 0.0 - notch 1-12, get a deep or iffy target and you can easily flick between the 2 to compare, I might even add a notch to the high end for the big iron say 95-99 but it's generally quite obvious what this is when you hit it..

Maybe more of us should try notch and lose the discrimination just to see what effect it has ::g

I used to notch 0-7 as you can notch out 7 numbers in basic, I did this to do just as you say and have 0 discrim on iron infested sites, it does make it much easier to work but I dont really do it anymore as I always had the feeling it was detracting from the performance of the machine in some way, dont know why but thats just what I got into my head. I know its not supposed to effect performance but I just got the feeling it was somehow, not much help I know, I cant say it improved my finds rate above just listening to the iron though murkey, have a try and see what you think mate :D ::g ::g

My understanding of a Notch facility is that it blocks a section of the conductivity scale that you are telling the machine you don't want to hear a signal from.
That is just the same as discrimination?

Notch as far as i am aware is an American concept.
It suits them perfectly because apparently none of their coins has the same conductivity as ring pulls and silver foil, this is why they can safely block certain sections of the conductivity scale with a notch.

I suppose to explain notch it is the same as copy and pasting a section of text in an essay and deleting it, so the reader doesn't see it.....

It may be different on the Deus which is something i am happy to be corrected on as i have never owned a Deus.

I use...
Deus fast
0 Disc
Notch 0-15 and 95-99
Sens 94
GB Manual 87-90

Runs as smooth as on high iron sites i detect and I have no fear of missing targets.
only downside is it runs pretty quiet so you dont have a clear picture of leaving and entering irony areas, its ok if you know the land/areas your working.
New sites ill run stock deus fast with iron vol at 2 or 3 and get a mental picture and drop back to custom settings.
Have faith B-)
