Rifle mag ID.

Post by MilitaryMetalMagnut »

Hi all,

This might be a bit of a long shot! (Pardon the the pun).

Today, I found a rifle magazine, which previously took a trip under the hedge trimmer! On finding it, I first thought it was for the L42 Sniper rifle, but a quick google showed it wasn't the same construction as the one I found. I then thought it's an Ishapore 2A1 rifle magazine (A post war Indian 7.62x51 NATO calibre version of the SMLE), again, similar but not quite mine.
So, I'm rather stumped. Pretty certain it's for the 7.62 NATO calibre, anyone have any thoughts?

It measures 1 1/4 inch wide (At base plate), 3 1/2 inches high, and pretty much exactly 3 inches long. .303 for size scale.

Many thanks!

Or maybe not i think the 303 mag has more of an angle to the base.

Look....this isn't fair! I pride myself on being able to ID 99% of ordnance and associated kit, but this one has me stumped!

The bottom of the mag suggests a rimmed cartridge as the 'bottom' is wider than the 'top'......so I assume it is a rimmed cartridge. But I can't match it to any rimmed cartridge magazine at all.

I'll get my coat.......

It's missing the spring and floorplate. Shame, as that would help give a rough size of the cartridge.

Ha! :P The bottom base plate of the mag is indeed varied widths - 34mm (1 5/16) and 29mm (1 2/16).
I swiped the .303 mag from my deac No.4 to compare, just about exactly the same size. many thanks for the link there, matey, the base plate on that one looks like it would 'slide' off to disassemble. The base plate on mine is welded to the body, but could be a variation of that one, though. Sure is a curious one!

Just to note. That .303 round isn't live, I made it up with a spare projectile, glued into an empty case. All I had to hand. lol. :)

I would guess at it being for a multi round shotgun, but my initial guess was at the 1960's L Enfield but the mag is different.

My apologies, only just seen the replies!

I'm certain it's post war. Love the suggestions, mates ::g Googled L39 and Ruger scout mags, look to be both the same size, but not quite the same. :-/ Oh well, will stay as a curio, for now anyway. Many thanks. ::g

Unless its for an SLR or SA80 then ive no idea, but if you cant decide on a positive ID it might be worth asking the chaps here International Ammunition Association who are incredibly knowledgable, and have been known to help out detectorists so long as they provide at least some level of sensible data on the item! (just like us they like pictures with scale and measurements!)

Im an IAA member still, a throwback to my earlier life amongst the brass and cordite
