Camber Sands - any tips?

Post by Apricot Lil »

Hello everyone,
I was considering taking the Ace 250 on a trip to Camber Sands as I thought it would make a change from the shingly beaches of Seaford and Worthing and I haven't had a chance to detect on proper sand yet.
Has anyone been there recently or got any tips of do's & dont's?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :D

Thanks for the link. Clearly might not be a lot to find but I think for a one off visit it would still be good experience for us with getting used to the detector and digging somewhere a little different. ::g

Go for it.

That's the beauty of metal detecting.

You never know.

Someone was telling me of a field they were doing for years and found nothing then a gold sovereign popped up. Persistence is the name of the game.

hi there you might well be lucky detecting there,but be very carefull if you venture out onto the sands at low tide,keep an eagle eye on the returning tide,what looks like an expanse of flat sand at low is deceiving,there will be channels,and lows filling up with the tide especialy behind you,just keep an eye out,and be safe.happy hunting.

Yes, John, thanks for the wise words regarding the tides. I recall there were some tragic deaths there last year.
Well, we've decided to give it a go tomorrow. Get up early and try and avoid traffic. I'll update tomorow regarding how we get on. :D

Lil,
I think you might have to get up even earlier to avoid the water - unless you live there. Looks like low tide is ~8.30am and high water at ~2pm. And forecast is some rain and just a bit blustery!
Should be fun and blow the cobwebs away but as Johntm says, watch that rising water.

Did you ever find the Welsh button man?

Hi Chris,
Yes already aware of the early tide but I'm used to getting up early so that won't be an issue (:|
Forecast I looked at showed sunshine all day, so hopefully no rain but I have just recently bought a control box cover for the Ace so at least it would be a test for that.
I didn't find the Welsh (nail not button) guy...I did try! x;

You're right - nail it was. I suppose finding "Mr. Jones" in Wales was a bit of a stretch.

Your day looks fine if the rain blows through early but there's the chance of some when you will be on the beach.

Hope you have a good day and don't forget the sun hat.

Well, we made it down to Camber Sands today although a little later than originally intended due to staying up to watch the Eurovision Song Contest rl;
Beautiful day for it although the wind was something else, definitely feeling a little scrubbed on the face now!
We parked down by the Kite Surfing centre where it was free and then walked backed up to the main zone (G) where the most sand could be found. Pickings were indeed very slim. We worked in 'All Metal' mode but notched out iron. Came away with just a £1 coin and a 1p but it was really good experience to try the Ace out on totally dry sand and use our homemade sand scoop for the first time.
It was quite a hike to get down there, almost 2 hours each way, so we probably won't be rushing to go down again any time soon. Glad we went though... ::g
No photos of finds this time but a couple of bonus pictures of the beach:

It certainly isn't easy at Camber anymore although it can still produce when the conditions are right.

I didn't make it this morning as got back from Germany yesterday evening and was knackered. Did get there this evening and finished up with about 3 dozen coins for about £2.50, a very unexpected silver 3d off of the dry sand while walking on and one predecimal halfpenny. Most coins were deep in the wet sand just in front of the main car park. Further out seems to have filled in since my last visit and nothing much found there. ::g
