I've only just noticed this thread, despite it being around six years old!

I'm not too far from Oldham, though it's not exactly local. I'm guessing the lukewarm responses are down to a couple of things: people have a preference for detecting alone (that's me personally, though my opinion might change with more experience... I don't know); people have their local permissions they're content with, or people simply want to keep what they have without getting bogged down with potential abusers, night-hawkers and whatever else. They could also just be shy, who knows?

I have discovered in my short time on here that detecting in the Manchester area is something of an unheard-of thing, with most members being from the southern areas of the country. Though there must be a fair few out there doing their thing...

I guess the absence is felt only if you prefer the group thing, as in most hobbies.
