My jaw dropped as I looked over the beach, a couple of days of easterlies had carved out gullys everywhere. I had intended to detect the low tide mark but was distracted by a gully only about 50 metres from the shore. I soon started pulling out predecimal coins in good condition from between two and 18 inches in the black sand sitting just under the surface. Every so often a ring or other item of silver came out. The only gold rings were pretty small 9ct ones (the two at the front of the photo) but it would be ungrateful to complain too much.

Eventually I did walk out to the more distant gullys but they were pretty quiet so I returned to my starting point. I continued digging signals until the incoming tide hit me like a tidal wave just as I was trying to recover a target and immediately drove me away. I just know that was the signal that i'd been looking for all day. I am booked up for a couple of days now and I'm not quite sure how I'm going to fit in another visit but I'm certainly going to try.
