A half decent day on the beach! Lots of silver but not much gold!

Post by fred »

Although I'd decided to hit a beach this morning I didn't set the alarm because of the dire weather forecast. In the event the four horsemen of the apocalypse decided to harass somewhere else and it was a lovely sunny, almost warm morning. Despite being a couple of hours later than was ideal I still had a couple of hours before low tide so I set off anyway.

My jaw dropped as I looked over the beach, a couple of days of easterlies had carved out gullys everywhere. I had intended to detect the low tide mark but was distracted by a gully only about 50 metres from the shore. I soon started pulling out predecimal coins in good condition from between two and 18 inches in the black sand sitting just under the surface. Every so often a ring or other item of silver came out. The only gold rings were pretty small 9ct ones (the two at the front of the photo) but it would be ungrateful to complain too much. ::g :D

Eventually I did walk out to the more distant gullys but they were pretty quiet so I returned to my starting point. I continued digging signals until the incoming tide hit me like a tidal wave just as I was trying to recover a target and immediately drove me away. I just know that was the signal that i'd been looking for all day. I am booked up for a couple of days now and I'm not quite sure how I'm going to fit in another visit but I'm certainly going to try.

Nicely done Fred.
Wish I lived nearer to you, could learn so much from your font of knowledge.
Being able to read the beach as you do is a skill that comes through a lot of experience.
It is something that will eventually die out as everyone wants everything instantly without actually learning. People who have learned about the outdoor ways will be at an advantage when all the power, mobile phone signals etc crash, which they will at sometime.
You could probably write a very interesting book with photos but then you would lose your secret locations as the hordes try to cash in.
All the Best ::g

"..The only gold rings were pretty small 9ct ones" - you know you've had a brilliant session when you can make a statement like that! Well done Fred. I now cant wait for some time off to go and hit the beach.
