Small live round for ID
Hi all,
I have recently come across this small live round with a blue tip and with a letter E on the base that we cannot ID, any insight would be of interest!
Cheers

Hi Fella
Military stuff is not my forte so i have approved this post for now
No doubt someone will be along shortly to confirm or deny my concerns, but i think its illegal to have live rounds in your posession, its obviously dangerous to have them in your home
Your post will stay for now, until i know whats what

Thanks Blackadder43 and understood, I'll will look forward to any further information and to its disposal / unloading from me, cheers
Just measured my 17HMR rounds and they are 35mm long and 7mm across the base so looks more like one of the other "17" rounds. They are variations on a theme based on energy
The whole of the bottom of the case forms the live area i.e. not like a centre fire cartridge, so don't whack it (I know you won't but some folk do the strangest of things).
If you don't have a Section 1 FAC ticket with that calibre on then you can't have it. Then you have to decide whether to hand it in (wouldn't be my choice) or dig a much deeper hole and lose it.
Cheers,
Chris

Not meaning to take this off topic, but why are people reluctant to hand live ammo into the police? Is there reams of paperwork needed as a result of handing it in? Also, once found, is there any legal obligation to hand it in, so simply burying it or throwing it away would be an illegal act?

I'd be happy to take this to the police station though I cant help thinking they would end up evacuating lol, as was the case once when I took an antique extinguisher full of Halon gas to the local fire station '' @#!%!!'' one exclaimed - you cant bring that ere !!
Thanks to this site however I now know you cannot take such items to the station but to call accordingly.
However the mudflats adjacent to my work place and the local firing range could be an apt resting place...
Lastly thanks to all for the replies, ive not found live rounds before so lots learnt today and very interesting!
Thanks again.

it's all a bit of a grey area and not helped by a number of the police not knowing the rules. This is how odd the firearms rules can be. I hold both shotgun and FAC 'tickets'. The guns are in cabinets in the house. Contrary to what some folks think they don't have to be in cabinets. My son has a shotgun ticket but I have to store the rifles and shotguns in separate cabinets only because he is not allowed to touch the rifles - he has keys to the shotguns. Add to that I have to store securely the rifle ammunition but I can fill my front room with as many shotgun cartridges as it can hold - and, believe it or not I don't need a shotgun ticket to acquire shotgun cartridges. And, if a copper knocks at the door and says to my wife "do you know where the gun cabinet keys are?" and she says "yes" we can both be prosecuted. So pragmatism is the order of the day.
In principle there is nothing difficult about taking ammunition to the station. But, the moment it's in your possession i.e. when it comes out of the hole, you are in fact, breaking the law.
The advice on this forum has been to call ahead and let them know you are coming and all should be fine. However, the general police can't give you permission to transport the ammunition. I doubt anything would happen but that's how it's written.
So alternative and pragmatic options might meet your needs. They must always be safe and avoid the item being found by someone else, especially children. Things I (just me) might choose to do:
Dig a deeper hole and bury it (possibly better location).
If the land is on a farm ask the owner - they may have a ticket for that ammunition - if he doesn't he'll bury it.
Hand it in.
It's just the first 2 options are much easier and keep the period between finding and disposal very short.
One thing I would try to avoid is "my dad's found some bullets!"... "bet he hasn't...."...."bet he has and I'll prove it..."
So no problem handing it in but general there are easier and sometimes possibly better things to do.

Thanks WVAM, some useful information - it's all very complex. I've never found any, nor do I want to really.

Hi all,
I'm new to this game and have yet to find any live rounds so my opinion is probably naïve and certainly not at all informed by any experience...
But for what it's worth, I think I would feel extremely uncomfortable re-burying a live round. I don't know what's going to happen to the place I bury it in coming years, it would feel like I'm just passing the problem (and potentially danger) on to someone else.
Even if it's harder, less convenient and full of legal riddles, my uninformed inclination would be to hand it in to the authorities so it can be safely disposed of. Just feels like the right thing to do.
Cheers all

A while back I took a couple of .303 rounds into a police station .............. I showed the pc on the desk and I got a look from him that said "oh my god --- all that paperwork", and his comment was "I've got to notify HQ and they will send a Firearms officer and a steel safe/box to put them in. But for now I will put them in a fire bucket in the yard until they arrive", he said.
Next time I will re-bury any I find - only much deeper!

I can't argue with that and nor would I want to. We all have to be comfortable with, and responsible for, our actions.Zyrbalax wrote: Wed Dec 12, 2018 2:50 pm Hi all,

Can I just raise one point. Before you pull it out of the hole you need to be sure what it is - not always so easy. This was discussed a lot on the ordnance forum and a good place to start is viewtopic.php?f=61&t=26252 Plenty of good advice and well worth a read.
