Another unexploded bomb.

Post by zodiacdave »

While out on Sunday morning in the forest behind my house I came across this thing. I was looking for old interesting stuff but I wasn't surprised when this turned up. I live in Overpelt Belgium where the Western front line took place in 1944. I rang the authorities which is a must when these things are found and they removed it on Tuesday afternoon after giving me a call at work.
My question is, is it German, English or American? I'm no expert when it comes to identifying but I find the history so fantastic.

Hi Dave, what sort of size was it? It's hard to get an idea of scale from the pic. :)

It's impossible to work out who it belonged to unless you had a close look and identified the markers on the 'shell'.

It could also be WW1 or WW2.

I would say about over a foot long with a girth at it's widest point around five inches

Looks very much like an American 155mm artillery shell. Not the kind of thing I'd want left on the doorstep! ;)

Can't remember what supporting artillery was in that area during 1944, but sure it actually came under British XXX Corps. So it could have been fired by a Brit or a Yank! 8-}
