Pebble beach tips for noob

Post by Junipersuction »

Hi folks!

I've just started treasure hunting on my local pebble beach and finding it tricky to locate stuff after getting a hit on the metal detector. Started off with a mini spade which was a mistake. Changed to a trowel and hands which is better. Guessing a pinpointer would make things easier?

Any tips on pebble beach detecting would be great. Pebbles ranging from 1cm to 5cm (ish).

Thanks in advance!

I have various digging tools but prefer my mini spade on the beach , pebbles or sand , you are right in saying pinpointer, it’ll make a huge difference , not particularly enjoyable on pebbles chasing a small blob of aluminium around the hole is it 😳

one of the few situations where a pin-pointer is a must

depending on size lower down a plastic tray can help. Scoop a load onto the tray. rescan, Once its on the tray its becomes easy

move as little as possible otherwise it will keep dropping down. Also shift the bigger pebbles out of the way as the will push the target out of the search area.

Pinpointer definitely. I think it was Felixstow180 or Addicted to bleeps on YouTube who had a video for a technique. Sorry, I cant find a link but sub and watch their vids anyway as the are great channels with loads of tips.

Basically sweep the pebbles to each side of target with your foot, scan again and if not in piles on either side dig out one scoop deep from left to right from the flattened area and place the spoil in individual piles in front of the flattened area, scan again and repeat. As you are spreading out the spoil over a wider area it stops it falling back in the hole.

The alternative is a big sand scoop and go in hard and fast. In all cases the pointer is your friend, set on low sensitivity so when it goes off you are close to target. What doesn't help is when the detector picks up foil that the pointer can't, spent 10 mins recently chasing a tiny bit of canslaw!

Hope this helps, Dava.

Thanks for the tips guys. Looks like I'm getting a pinpointer then! Spent 15 mins the other day trying to locate a target.

Any recommendations on a pinpointer? Don't want to spend loads but I'm guessing the budget ones aren't very good?

Check out the accessories section on the left, tons of advice there.

Cheers, Dava.
