Shell Casing Help Please

Post by wizbit »

Hi, I found this (sorry about quality of quick phone photo) whilst digging in my garden. I think you can get an idea of the shape of the bullet. I know nothing about ordnance and wondered if anyone could help? It was found with another case over the end of the bullet and appeared as two cases end to end when discovered. I can make out GER 9m (presumably 9mm) on the end of one and R O on the other. Grateful thanks.

Thanks for the replies. What are 9mm pistols used for? I live in the countryside on the Isle of Wight and am used to seeing shot gun cartridges. It also seems odd that it had been encapsulated within another case.

I don't know the full answer but I used to pistol shot before it was banned, 9mm is a fast volocity round, general war use, when hitting a body after impact it will bounce around the body doing a lot of damage, downside is it isn't very accurate. For accurancy and if you only want to stop someone you use a slower speed like a 38, like the Police use. 9mm is also a very cheap round to use, think the Germans invented that one. Speed is also subject to type of bullet head and bow much gun powder is in it. On a target the difference is quite a lot between the 2 types of round
Sorry to answer your questone about use, probabley some one illegally firing an old pistol. Or possibly military training in the war

Re bullet tip, sorry didn't look at that, it is called a wod cutter, the tip being flat to make a nice round hole in a paper target, a jacketed bullet tears a hole, not sure on spelling of wod , only shot for a couple of months
