Oliver, rule number one of finding anything like this is If you do not know what it is leave it were it is.

Sorry Oliver but it is very concerning that the only way you would know the were hollow is by picking them up and cleaning any soil out of them, the next ones may not be hollowoliver wrote:I am not a fool these are completely empty lumps of iron but thanks for your concern.

Could well be something to do with horticulture the field they were found is half a mile from a Norman castle so may be part of a weapon or standard who knows.

I don't think these are any kind of firearm projectile at all. The dimensions and shape are all wrong.
I do echo the other comments though. If you thought they were large military projectiles, it would have been far wiser to leave them where you found them.

Look more agricultural than military Oliver. Are you suggesting the area they came from might have some military history?oliver wrote:Found these two iron bullet shaped objects on a plough field they are hollow inside and are 40mm in diam are they a shell of some kind.

Not as far as i or the land owner knows of but it has been a good fields for hammered silver coins going back to Edward the 111 and there is a Norman castle not far the name of the field is Butts field and the house there is called Butts cottages so may have been used for archery and training in the medieval times.Wansdyke44 wrote:Look more agricultural than military Oliver. Reminds me of the thingy you hammer into the ground to put up a washing line - so maybe if medieval archery etc it could have be used to hold a removable pole for some purpose? Maybe a lance target or something similar.....
..............mind you that's speculation of almost 'Timeteamesque' proportions
