US army spade head

This is what I love, real history, I found this spade on the edge of a dug-out in the Ardennes, why was it left there? did the shaft break? We will never know why but what we do know is that it was left by a US soldier after digging out, a brave man who proberbly didn't want to be there, a man much braver than me.
