11mm bullet

Post by craghopper »

Found this bullet on pasture it's 11mm dia and 32mm long with arrow mark and O below on rear ,
the 11mm matches a Vickers machine gun or a Mauser rifle ,it's heavy lead but can see no rifling marks to show it has been fired but they could be worn off. Any ideas of its origin,

11mm is .43 inch. Maybe a bit of wear but previously was a .45? (12mm is .47 inch, so very close!)
A total newbie - please be nice

Thanks for replys I read an article on 11mm bullets and it said vickers did use them in a machine gun ,also there were 11mm balloon bullets but they were incendiary bullets to shoot down barrage balloons, looking at it again it's full metal jacket not lead it was the grey colour that made me think it was lead ,it does have a couple of marks on it as if it has hit a solid object it was too close to trees to be caught by plough etc .

Vickers used .303 which would be 7.7mm and Mauser (Kar98) was 7.92mm, so it wouldnt be that either. Like someone said it could be a .45 depends on how you measured it?

Think you will find that you have a bullet from the Martini Henry rifle. Which was the british military rifle in the 1870's and used in the Zulu wars.

11mm was the mod 1871/84 Mauser, it was a 9 shot bolt action and was the first to use the famous "Mauser bolt" which is still used in many sporting rifles today. it was the German's answer to the Martini-Henry .577 which was a single shot with a much larger caliber.
i know the 1871 Mauser quite well......i actually have one right here. :D
