can someone give me some info on this 20mm case

Post by Jason5223 »

Hi Everyone, was out with dad yesterday and he dug out a 20mm casing. We have cleaned it up and have the following info from the bottom of it.

Stamped in the bottom is 20mm 1941 and what looks like PC or RC, it's very faint so cant work it out very well. Can anyone shed some light on if this was fired from an aircraft cannon as it seems to have 2 small dents around the rim at the bottom.
Vickers at South Marston isnt to far away and there was a small satalite airfield for vickers quite close by as well that also doubled up as a training airfield.

Thanks for any help with this.

It is a 20mm Hispano-Suiza cartridge. The dimps are where the gun mechanism has forced the cartridge into the breach of the gun and then extracted it again once fired, hence two dimps. It will have been fired by an aircraft, as Hispano-Suiza 20mm weapons were only very VERY rarely used by ground/naval forces, as they used the Oerlikon which had a different shaped cartridge.

As for the markings, I strongly suspect the letter code is 'RG' for Radway Green.

Cheers

I think the RC is for Raleigh Cycles.... they made millions of 20mm cases in WW2. :) :)
