Ammunition Question

Post by 52747 »

Hi All

I know nothing at all about ammo - and in this hobby am expecting to come across some (things like from hunts in wooded areas).

Please could someone post some pictures of what would be safe to handle and not handle ? Eg what would be live and not live, from the point of view of a complete novice.

Although my hands aren't great, I'd still like to keep them both :-)

Thanks

I lived by a MOD Firing Range for 30yrs, and as kids we used to go on to the Range after they'd been used and collect the empty, and some times live rounds, we didn't have XBox's in those days :)

Basically there are two types of "Live" Ammo you may come across:

1 Any casing that has round or bullet, still fixed into the case
2 Blank rounds, these look similar to the others but they don't have the bullet head, the tip is crimped, and is coloured red or green for instance. But still contain a explosive charge
Both are highly DANGEROUS
If these are found, leave them and contact your local firearms officer

There are some photo's of such rounds in the Military Ordnance section of the Forum

Take care
ANDY.

Check out this thread and some of the others on the Ordnance Section:

For most people, unless you are digging on an old Army range, you are most likely to find shotgun cartridges of various ages. As already said a cartridge on it's own should be perfectly safe to handle. If you have any concerns over an item post a picture of it and it can probably to positively identified.

Having said that, you should NOT move ANY item you are not sure about. If it is LIVE then you MUST let the Police or the Army know at once.

It's always safer to photograph something and then ask rather than handle if you are not sure. [:)
