bullet tips

couple of bullet tips i have found when out with the metal detector. the top bullet tip i found is 8mm x 34mm with a groove 13mm from the bottom.
and the other one is 13mm x48 with a groove 18mm from the bottom.

Top one is a .303 Cal. Projectile, second one is a .50 Cal. Projectile, but this is a bit shorter than the ones I have, the parallel base may indicate a tracer on that one, but get the guy's here to give you a second opinion on this one as it is a little short ?

I have been collecting these bullets for a short while now, get them donated from the club I belong to, have about 40 now

First off, they are just called bullets. No need for the 'tip' bit as I was expecting to see just the tip of a bullet.

Dave is spot on with the first ID but I think the other may well be a .55 Boys. The shortness of the bullet and the lack of a boat tail leads me to think this. If it is a Boys, it is almost certainly armour piercing and illegal to possess. Google 'Boys anti tank rifle' and you will be able to see the weapon.

Hopefully Dean (Ajax) will see this thread and give us his opinion on what it is.

i have just gave it a bit of a clean and it looks like the whole tip is painted red.do you no what sort arn't legal.

If the whole tip is red then it is as Dave says.......50cal tracer. Just not seen one that short before.

Hi Adam, I have learnt all my stuff mainly from Steve (RRPG) I am always bugging him for an ID lol There are some proper experts here, I am the trainee

The other Bullet that Steve has mentioned is a new one to me

Re the dangerous ones, we need to avoid anything that may have phosphorus or other explosive type stuff in, the first can burst in to white hot flames with contact with air, like magnesium burning, and water will not put it out !! So anything with a coloured top is usually bad, see the pictures in those links I posted, the Tracer can be identified as a non tapered base, and the Incendiary (Blue Tip) has a double band round it, I have found black, blue and red painted 50 cal bullets
