British army dump dig - April 2013

Post by RRPG »

Hi all

Thought I would share the results of the dig at the British army dump. Unfortunately, as I had been digging all day the day before at the RAF base, my energy was rather low so I did far more sitting around and chatting than I did digging ! However, I did find some nice bits, even if I was only there for half a day :) :)

Everything I brought home.......

Sten gun Mk 5 stocks.

The best find of the day, if a little fragile. Going to have to be careful cleaning this !!! Vickers MG handle. :D :D :D

You can see it in this picture. The wood has rotted away but it is definitely a Vickers handle.

Some nice Lee-Enfield butt plates

A Lee-Enfield oiler bottle and ID disc. A .30cal cartridge and a little tube I have yet to ID. :D

Most numerous finds of the day were these MG cloth belt starter tabs.

The longer Browning ones all carry the same markings, as shown below.

And one Vickers MG cloth belt starter tab. The odd thing about this one is that it is marked 'US' and, on the reverse, states 'MADE BY MILLS WOVEN CARTRIDGE BELT CO. 1913'. A strange item to be made in the US !

That's it for now. Not my normal volume of finds but I wasn't there long as I was so knackered from the day before !!

:D

Yep :) Really pleased with the Vickers handle. Already held it at the front bedroom window pretending to machine gun cars :) With sound effects of course :)
