36mm ?

I found this in cornwall in september, in sand dunes not that far from where i found the 1940 303 round.
Can you please tell me what its off and what was its purpose?

Hello Dave, Basically what you have there is the base plug of a Mk.1 Mills Grenade 1940 which matches your 303 date, more info on this site - http://www.millsgrenades.co.uk
