id needed on bullet

Post by foundit »

Found a couple of dozen large calibre bullets while detecting a new permission some whole some flattened. the bullet on the right is from a .303, can any one id the larger calibre one. :-/ :-/ could it be from an early 20th late 19thcentury single shot rifle as the field it was found in had a training camp near it from about 1904.
thanks

It looks a big blighter. Maybe Snider-Enfield as that shot a 577 calibre bullet and yours looks similar size. Good find! [:)

Working on the assumtion jacketed around .30,would assume lead bullet to be arround .45,so likely to be from Martini/Henry(Martini Action/Henry rifling/Barrel).577/450 cartridge.(.577case necked down to .450)

You haven't found any cartridge cases as you're obviously at the target end of the old range. Look around the field and see if you can identify a suitable spot from where they would have been firing the weapons. It will usually be 200 meters away, but could be as far as 500 meters. Once you find the spot where they were firing from, cartridge cases will appear in abundance!

had a look around today...no obvious spot...its in a field that has a steep hill on one side and a river on the other. the field is about 200 yards long and 75 yards wide and has a house at each end which predate the camp site. the bullets cover the whole area of the site. will have to delve a bit deeper as I dont like mysteries lol.. ::g ::g ::g ..tried the farmer but he couldnt throw any light on what had been going on in the field.. :-/ :-/ did find a number of coins 9 half pennys and 5 pennys and a shilling dating from 1866 to 1948.. ::g

The end with the steep hill will probably be the aiming point as the hill forms a natural barrier, preventing the bullets hitting people outside the range boundaries. So, I would walk 2-300 yards away from the hill and start searching there. It is quite plausible one or both houses were used by the army as ops offices for the range. Indeed, the firing point could have been within yards of either house. :)
