Grenade Piece

Post by stejens »

Found this bottom part of a grenade, I assume the number (41) makes this a 1941 WWII piece?

Thought I would share anyway, I would of thought these get obliterated into millions of pieces on explosion too.

Hi

I love finding these. The cases are cast iron and usually shattered but large numbers of the plugs have survived. ::g

1940 Mills No.36M Mk.1 Hand Grenade base plug.

Normal for the base plug to survive .

Thanks Doug, does anyone know what the base plug metal is, it has a silvery color to it, so maybe a mix of metals. :-/

I think it's steel but I'm not 100% sure.

I love finding these :) they're made of Zinc, that's what the large capital letter 'Z' stands for. :)

I have not been able to find anymore about this company

A mate and I used to find no end of base plugs on a beach at one time. My mate found one with the rest of the grenade still attached once, that beach got cleared of people very fast =)) s;..

Oh good, I'm not the only one then. Haha!

I love finding grenade bits, found this little lot in just a 2 hour search. (Along with some nice mortar bomb fuzes!)

Image

You should also find the bottom part of the guide tube, which goes in the centre of the grenade. They look like little cones, I have some in the middle on my pic. Along with the screw caps at the bottom left, those are 'Filler screws' and go on the side of the grenade after it's filled with explosives. :)

Nice little lot there!, not found the tubes yet but will keep a lookout, nor found any filler screws though I have been keeping it in memory for when I do.

The beaches and cliff erosion here have so many items from the war, I have found tons shrapnel and other bit's and pieces, got a bucket load of fired .303's (the live ones go to police station), and a fair few of those crimped blanks. s;..

Never a trip to the beach happens without a handful of some type of bullet and things, only time I called the coastguard out was for this large item, which I think was a bullet for a big air gun or some sort..

Image

I was doing my first youtube video with my old Ace 150 when I found it, the coastguard and 2 police came and dealt with it after we had gone.

I do enjoy digging it all up as I like learning about the items, it's became kind of a side collection now that I always look to add too :D
